There is something about being at sea level that feels exactly right to me. I don’t know how to describe it other than my heart feels most peaceful at that place where sand and sea meet – as though gravity has brought me “home.” Fully settled. Fully present.
There are other times when I have the “sea level” feeling. Most often, it is when I am doing something that comes naturally to me yet meets a need or serves a greater purpose. Parenting is one of those things for me.
As I write this, both of our children are far from home, doing “sea level” things. I see how their hearts are soaring, and it makes me giddy.
I spent a few days this week with Elizabeth in Rodanthe, NC. She is living and working (thriving) on the narrow strip of land known as the Outer Banks between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pamlico Sound (literally, at sea level). She is a SummerShine Activities Director for a campground there – leading a team of young adults and teens in their summer ministry. With her “Mama Duck” personality, love of teaching and natural leadership ability, it would seem she was born for this role.
Meanwhile, Nick is on a mountain in the Dominican Republic on his first international mission trip. I haven’t been able to communicate with him at all this week, but Rob is there with him so I have seen photos, and it is clear that Nick is in his element. “Sea level” for him is when he’s working with children, particularly those in a place of need. These children have his heart – I can see it.
What a blessing, that they are discovering the nature of their callings. What a joy, to see them pursuing worthwhile work that fills them up. So many people wait too long to do what they were meant to do. Go for it, kids! Remember how good this feels – even when it is very hard.
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. – Ephesians 2:10
