On Counting Down

Remember The Count from Sesame Street? With his pointy muppet nose and the cape flung across his opposite shoulder?  Well, if he was here in our house right now, he’d be having a blast. I can hear him… Five!  Five days of school. Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah! Ha!

That’s all we have left right now.  Five – count ’em – five days of high school left.  Five.  Five days for Nick to be in school.  Five days for Rob and me to have a child in high school.  And then this part is over. It’s quite a strange thing.

We’ve been counting down for several weeks now.  I’m surprised and delighted to say that I’m not having to pretend to be excited for him – I’m honestly thrilled for him.  He is so ready to finish and so ready for what is next.  (Senior year is so much about looking forward – it is difficult to see yourself where you are!)  He has worked hard and learned well from a community of amazing people – friends, mentors, teachers, family members – each of whom has poured their bit into his cup til it is now overflowing with readiness, with promise.

Instead of resenting the count down, I’m resolved to making things count.

I’m counting the blessings in the moments as they pass.

And I’m counting on God for the comfort I know He’ll provide when reality sets in on August 15.

(Not quite ready to count down to that yet!)
