Taking Every Thought Captive

We are in the middle of a very restful Christmas break.  One of the best gifts we received this year was finding out early that Elizabeth was accepted to her first choice – Appalachian State University.  She found out on the very first night of the Break – what a blessing!  Now the fun begins.

I came downstairs a few mornings ago to find Elizabeth and Nick mid-embrace in the kitchen.  It was because he had said, “This is the last Christmas you are going to be here for the whole thing.”

I’ve been “not thinking” about that – really hard.  I mean business.  I’ve spun it many  different ways to make myself feel better.  My favorite:  ‘Next year will be the first  year she’s really excited to be here at Christmas.”  Yeah, I know…lame, but it’s the best I could come up with.

I’ve found the best tactic is just not to think any of these “last time” thoughts too long.  Just let them pass through quickly – don’t invite them to dinner or even for coffee.  Well, maybe coffee, as long as it is a productive meeting. For instance,  if entertaining “said thought” spurs me into some sort of planning or preparation for next year, then it is okay to have one quick cup.  But only if it is a really quick “I’m-on-my-way-to-meet-someone-else-who-is-more-important” cup of coffee.

It is working for me.  So far.  Kind of.

2 Corinthians 10:5
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
